Keep your focus on the Lord Jesus Christ
Matthew 6:19-23
A. In Matthew chapter 6 and verse 22, Jesus made a significant statement. "If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light."
What Jesus meant was is that your attention should be steadily directed at one object, that being God.
Psalm 137:6 say's, "If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.
Matthew 6:21 say's "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
One should consider that whatever has the greatest influence in your life will also have the greatest impact.
You must allow Jesus Christ to be the first and most important thing in your life.
Consider these examples.
Ropedancers look ahead when they dance, and not at the rope. If they didn't they would get dizzy and lose their balance.
If one was to cross a stream walking on a log, or walk across a swinging bridge, one looks ahead and not down so they won't get dizzy or frightened.
Consider that darkness is a liar. If you don't believe it, try walking through a dark room.
When Jesus Christ and your relationship with Him is not a priority to you, you will misplace your trust.
Remember that Peter took his eyes off of Jesus.
Matthew 14:25-30
And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. 30But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
To play ball you must have good hand and eye coordination. You were taught as a child that you should never take your eyes off the ball.
Gunslingers can draw and shoot from the hip with no aiming. Focus is on the object of interest.
A pilot looks at the horizon when landing.
When flying in bad weather he looks at the attitude indicator to remain level.
Sometimes pilots experience spatial disorientation. Spatial disorientation is a condition in which an aircraft pilot's perception of direction (proprioception) does not agree with reality.
A glider pilot keeps a glider streamlined by watching a short peace of yarn called the yaw string, which is attached to the pitot tube. If the yaw string is off center, it means the glider is flying sideways through the air. This creates unnecessary drag, which results in unnecessary loss of altitude.
Drag is a rearward retarding force and is caused by the disruption of airflow by any protruding object. While there's nothing keeping you from it, doing some things will take your focus from God, and hold you back.
1 Corinthians 10:23 say's "all things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
This means that just because one has the privilege of doing something doesn't mean that doing it is the right thing to do.
What happens to a pilot when he fails to examine and reexamine his charted course?
What happens to a captain when he neglects the aids given him for navigation?
And what if the Captain of the Titanic had paid attention to what he didn't see?
Whatever has the most attention in your life will also have the most affect.
Remember to keep your focus on the Lord Jesus Christ.
In His service,
Pastor Bryan A. Adkins
